(Water heaters san francisco) Warning Signs of a Weakened Boiler :
May 5th, 2010By Byron Gram
A burst boiler or burst pipe resulting from pipe rot and or high pressure is one of the most severe plumbing emergencies. A boiler and or pipe, weakened by corrosion, and subsequent flooding of the basement, and absence of hot water, are common elements of this emergency. While ti is well known that a boiler may burst and lead to a flood of hot water, it can also cause a carbon monoxide leak or even explode. A carbon monoxide leak could prove fatal to a household as the gas is odorless, tasteless and colorless causing people to pass out and not realize they are being poisoned. The first sign of a rotting boiler is frequently a water leak at the base. Gradual onset of a plumbing emergency, is more common than the sudden unexpected disaster. The rise and fall of temperatures around the boiling point inside a hot water heater cause changes in the state of the water inside the tank, and can cause tell tale noises. This is frequently the eaerliest sign that all is not well with the boiler. Boiler noises are almost always associated with lime or sludge iron deposits on the inside of the boiler. These deposits cause an uneven distribution of water within the tank. Water trapped in deposits close to the heat exchange area may heat up rapidly causing a hissing noise and vibration. When this overheated water reenters the circulation, it rapidly condenses, and causes a knocking noise. spin}Another cause of boiler noise, is a drop in the rate of circulation inside the tank. Slow circulation may cause water to remain in contact with the heat exchange surface too long, leading to overheating, and the production of boiler noise, as described above. |If the circulation in a boiler drops, then water will remains in contact with the heat exchange surface longer than it should and may heat up to a very high temperature, causing noises as described above. Another well-known cause of boiler noise is air blisters caused by air sucked up into the boiler ciruculation through a faulty radiator. When the trapped air contacts the heat exchange surface of the boiler, it displaces the water which normally absorbs the heat, and there can be a sudden rise in temperature. Water within the boiler will suddenly turn to gas and subsequently condense, and both changes are associated with boiler noises. A similar effect can occur when a boiler suddenly shuts down. Standing water is now in contact with the heat exchange surface, which is still quite hot, and this result in a sudden rise in the local water temperature, with resultant noise. Increased temperature in a boiler also enhances the precipitation of lime and sludge on the inner surface of the water tank, aggravating the problem. The cycle of overheating when the boiler shuts down, can occur over and over again in the lifetime of a boiler with inadequate safety mechanisms. This can foreshorten the life of the boiler, predisposing it to leak or rupture. A normal healthy boiler has sufficient circulation and adequate temperature control to prevent the conditions that lead to the onset of boiler noises. Significantly, most modern boilers, in the name of space saving and economy have much smaller heat exchange surfaces. Therefore, to prevent damage, the modern boiler must have: Total absence of even the slightest deposit of any kind.. Good or high velocity of water through the heat exchanger. Complete avoidance of air blisters passing through the boiler. If your boiler makes noises or has begun to leak at the bottom, you should have it checked out by an engineer or boiler technician. | Don’t wait until disaster strikes. How to Decide Which Faucet is Right For my Kitchen
By Byron Gram
Selecting and installing a kitchen sink is an important kitchen plumbing challenge. In this article I will discuss important considerations for a homeowner preparing to choose a kitchen sink. There are myriads of kitchen faucets, and each one has its own profile of special features. Determining which faucet is right for you will depend on your specific needs. Some of the fauvet options include installation of multiple faucets, or additions of special features to the faucet. Additional kitchen faucets are made with dual handles action. One handle controls the cold water flow and the other controls the hot water flow. This model is advantageous because the apparatus allows the user to separately adjust the flow of hot and cold water and thus more precisely regulate both flow and temperature. The two-handled faucets also come in more styles. For convenience sake, most handles come as a lever or x shaped design. Both shapes are ideal for grasping, although people with manual disabilities find the lever handles easier to manage. Faucet necks might be long or short, curved or straight. All types can be effective, but it is paramount that the faucet shape selected will permit the water to flow into the center of the sink basin. If you plan to use your sink for washing large pots and other cooking utensils, then select a faucet which comes with a large spout, that you can easily move to the side. Also be sure the faucet has an elevated arch, for example more than 35 cm or close to 15 inches. Such a faucet can be turned aside when you want to load your pots into the sink. You can subsequently maneuver the spout over the top of the pots being cleaned. Then, when you are done, you can swing the spout back to the side and remove the cooking pots. If you have a large sink with two or more basins, all served by one spout, then be sure to choose a spout with a wide reach, so that as you turn it this way and that the water flow can reach into the center of each basin Some kitchens will require a special spout called a “pot filler.” This spout comes up close to the cooking range. It is only used to fill heavy pots with water , and save the long carry from the sink to the stove. Installation of this pot necessitates a cold water pipe, which comes up from the wall close to the cooking area. |One unique type of faucet spout is called the “pot filler.” This spout is fixed to the kitchen wall close to the stove. It’s purpose is to provide water for large cooking pots. The convenient location, close to the stove, saves the cook from having to carry large pots, full of water, from the sink to the stove area. Installation of this spout necessitates having a distinct incoming ground water line. } Faucets come in one of four different operation types. The oldest mechanism is the rubber washer faucet, next oldest is the ball faucet, and most recently is the ceramic cartridges and the ceramic discs. Rubber washer faucets are cheap, however, they wear out rapidly and must be replaced. Ceramic cartridge and disc faucets last much longer but are more expensive initially. {The last quality a homeowner should consider before purchasing a faucet is the material the faucet is made of. Chrome and brass make durable faucets and require little maintenance. Even after you have decided on a brass base, you can change the color of the surface with an overlay. Materials that are used to overlay brass include nickel, stainless steel, copper, zinc, bronze silver and gold. Finish alternatives include a polished finish or a matte finish. Additional materials that can be used to decorate the faucet include porcelain, glass or wood.| Typical high quality material used to make faucets includes brass and chrome. These two materials are both durable and consequently require little maintenance. The external look of a brass or chrome faucet can be altered by an overlay with materials such as nickel, stainless steel, copper, zinc, bronze, silver, or gold. The finish may be varied to a smooth or dull, lackluster look. The faucet may be adorned with various materials, such as porcelain, glass or wood. Finally homeowners have the option of installing the faucet through the sink itself, through the countertop surrounding the sink or even through the wall. DIY homeowners can attempt to install the sink themselves. Whereas others may choose to employ the services of a professional plumber
